Internship & Thesis Literature Research for AHF

This guide has been created to help students of the Academy for Hotel and facility Management with literature research during their internship/placement/thesis.

Defining search terms

Once you have determined your topic and formulated a search question you start gathering search terms. This is very important, as using the right search terms will give you relevant search results. You can use a mind map to gather search terms systematically. Use combinations of search terms to search more specifically.

For inspiration see the videos below, the first video is in Dutch, the second is in English.

Example of defining search terms

You have formulated the following research question:

" I’m looking for information on the current customer experience strategies of the top 3 global hotel brands in Amsterdam"

You can define a few search terms from this research question and your scope:

  • current period
  • customer experience strategy
  • top 3 global hotel brands
  • Amsterdam
  • Netherlands

But just 5 search terms/scope is not enough to find all the information you will need to answer this research question. Therefore you should try to define more search terms that will help you during the literature research process. You can for instance do this by using a mindmap and mapping out all the terms that could be related to the first search terms.

For example:

Top 3 global hotel brands: you need to check what the current top 3 is. Add those names to your list.

Customer experience strategy: customer experience strategies, customer experiences, CX, CE, customer experience, consumer experence, guest experience, tourist experience, employee experience, etc.

Using a thesaurus

To get ideas about what search terms to use and/or to be complete in your search terms, you can use thesauri.

Thesauri are list of keywords that displays synonyms, broader terms, narrow terms, related term and sometimes the translation to other languages. These are fixed keyword terms editorial boards of databases apply to books and articles.

The CAB thesaurus can be accessed by using the "Help" -tab (top of screen) at the Leisure and Tourism Database.

A Hospitality & Tourism thesaurus can also be accessed by using the "Thesaurus"-tab (top of screen) at the Hospitality and Tourism Complete

or a Business thesaurus by using the "Thesaurus"-tab (top of screen) at the Business Source Complete.

Using encyclopedia's and dictionaries

Another way to get ideas about what search terms to use and/or to be complete in your search terms, is to use an encyclopedia or a dictionary, specifically one for your field/expertise.

For FM there is the FMPedia. This is a selection of meanings & definitions of facility management words maintained by IFMA. The IFMA FOUNDATION promotes and supports this glossary for the advancement of facility management worldwide. The purpose of the glossary is to provide a resource to the international facility management community, whereby users can look up meanings/definitions of words, add new words, and comment on existing definitions; or simply provide links to additional resources on FM-related subjects

And there is the FM Glossary. A resource for the facilities management community to look up meanings and definitions of regularly used words, acronyms and phrases. The FM glossary includes standard facilities management terms that don’t change that much and new ones that evolve based on what is happening within the FM industry.
