Right-click on the relevant map layer in the Layers Panel and choose Open Attribute Table
With your mouse, go to the left-hand side of the table and click on the right objects. In the table, the objects will turn blue; in the map image they will turn yellow.
In the Layers Panel, activate the layer in which you wish to make your selection
In the Project Toolbar, click on the arrow symbol next to the Select Features by Area button or single-click.
Choose the relevant selection method
In the map image, click on the area you wish to select. The areas will turn yellow.
Now you can enter an expression.
In the case of integers and decimal numbers:
In the middle window, click on Fields and Values and double-click on the field (the column) that contains the values you wish to select – for instance if you want to select all municipalities with more than 100,000 residents.
The name of the field will appear in the left window:
Click on the operator you wish to use, for instance >
Now type in the limit value, in the example this is 100,000
Click on Select (or choose one of the other options) and then on Close
In the case of categories:
Sometimes values have been placed in categories. Just think of a file on livestock farms which contains the categories of dairy cattle, pigs, goats, etc. If you wish to select the goats:
In the middle window, click on Fields and Values
Double-click on the field which contains the categories – this field will appear in the left window
Click on the operator =
On the right side, click on All Unique – in the right window, all the values will now appear that are contained in this field
Choose the category you wish to select – ‘goats’ in this case
Click on Select and close the window
You can also make a selection by adding two layers on top of each other. You can then select all objects from the source layer which overlap (or are situated at a certain distance from… etc.) with objects from a second layer.
Click on Vector in the Menu Toolbar
Choose Spatial Query in the drop-down menu to open the window
At the source file, fill in the layer from which you wish to select certain objects
At the second bar, fill in how the layers should be related to each other (contains, intersect, disjoint)
In the bottom bar, fill in the layer with which you want to make the overlap
Choose if you wish to create a new selection or adjust an existing one
Click on Apply
